New Zealand is literally a White Water Rafting paradise. There are numerous relatively short, fast-flowing rivers that offer a wide range of rafting experiences, with different excitement levels and trip lengths.
Options range from Grade 1 Rivers, providing very scenic and gentle trips through to a number of extreme adventure Grade 5 Rivers for those seeking the ultimate in fun and thrills.
Trips range from 2 hours to 5 days and are led by qualified rafting guides who comply with comprehensive safety codes. There are numerous rivers in both the South and North Islands offering the full range of options.
Grade 1 - Gentle or no current. Calm waters.
Grade 2 - More current than Grade 1 with small
waves but no major obstacles.
Grade 3 - Intermediate level requiring qualified
Guides and more current and some
rapids.
Grade 4 - Steeper, often swifter and longer.
Numerous obstacles and rapids.
Grade 5 - Strong currents and big waves.
Several boulders, holes and rapids.
Potential to flip rafts on occasions.
Grade 6 - Generally considered non-raftable.
