There are Caving opportunities in many parts of New Zealand with most caves being limestone caves. A typical caving adventure will include viewing great limestone formations, exploring underground streams and waterfalls and enjoying galaxies of glow-worms.
Many places offer Guided Tours with very experienced Guides and appropriate safety levels.
The well known areas for Caving include the famous Waitomo Caves along with Northland, Auckland and the Hawkes Bay in the North Island. There are extensive options around Nelson, (large, deep caves) and the West Coast in the South Island.
Canyoning is a unique guide led water and rock semi-underground adventure where you slide down waterfalls, cross streams and rivers, jump off ledges, abseil into deep chasms and generally have a lot of fun and get very very wet. The more common commercial options are in Auckland, Christchurch and Wanaka.
